This article provides straightforward answers, even for aspects that may not benefit course sales. If you're considering investing several million VND and hundreds of hours, you deserve to hear the unvarnished truth.
First and foremost: What a certification can do
PenTest+ will not get you a job. No employer will hire a pentester just because they see that line on a CV—this profession involves technical interviews, where you must prove your capabilities.
What it can do are two things: get your resume past keyword filters, and prove you understand the testing process, not just how to use tools. The second point is far more important than many people realize, as it distinguishes professional candidates from self-taught individuals.
Suitable positions
Penetration Tester (pentester) The literal position. In Vietnam, primarily at cybersecurity service companies, some large banks, and corporations with internal security teams.
Information Security Assessor Broader than pure pentesting: configuration review, vulnerability assessment, compliance checks. Many positions in Vietnam are actually this type, even if titled "pentester."
Application Security Engineer (AppSec) If you have a programming background, this is a rapidly growing area of demand—especially at software companies serving international clients.
Security Consultant Advising corporate clients. The Engagement Management section of PenTest+ is particularly useful here, as the job involves working with clients, not just systems.
SOC analyst tier 2–3 and threat hunter Counterintuitive for an offensive certification, but understanding how attackers operate significantly improves your defensive capabilities. Many SOC teams prioritize candidates with a pentesting background.
Internal Red Team In organizations large enough to have their own dedicated teams—banks, telecommunications, large technology corporations.
Companies that hire frequently
Cybersecurity service companies (MSSP, professional pentest firms). The most consistent demand, and where you'll learn the fastest due to working on many different projects.
Banks and financial institutions. Subject to significant compliance pressure, mandatory periodic testing, and ample budgets.
FDI enterprises and companies providing services to international clients. This group values certifications the most, as their parent companies or clients reference international standard frameworks. PenTest+ is approved under the U.S. Department of Defense's DoD 8140 framework, and this influences how many organizations write job requirements.
Large telecommunications and technology corporations with internal security teams.
Market reality — straight talk
Three things you should know before investing:
1. Junior pentester positions in Vietnam are significantly fewer than junior SOC analyst positions. Companies need SOC analysts year-round; testing is project-based and usually assigned to experienced individuals. If you need a job urgently within the next 6 months, this is a significant consideration—CySA+ might be a more realistic choice.
2. However, competition at the senior level is low. The number of people who can genuinely perform professional testing—including writing decent reports for clients—is not high. This is a profession where the gap between "knowing how to use tools" and "being able to do the job" is vast, and most self-taught individuals stop at the former.
3. Certification opens the door, but a portfolio helps you walk through it. Pentest interviews almost always have a technical component. You'll be asked what you've done, what you found, and how you handled it.
Regarding salary
I will not provide specific figures, as all cybersecurity salary data in Vietnam online has issues: either too old, too small a sample size, or mixes local and international companies—which have vastly different pay scales.
Three more accurate and useful points:
Certifications rarely directly increase salary, but they increase the number of invitations. More invitations mean more negotiation power. That's how certifications impact income.
The type of company influences salary more than the certification. The same person working at a local company versus an FDI company can see a significant difference.
Self-research is the most reliable method. Go to major job sites, filter by "pentest," "penetration testing," "PenTest+," review the 20–30 most recent postings, and note the advertised salary ranges. It takes 30 minutes and gives you current market data.
What's needed beyond certification
A portfolio that tells a story. Self-built labs, targets you've exploited, and most importantly: reports you've written yourself. A well-crafted penetration test report for a lab environment is more convincing than three certifications.
Writing skills. This profession sells reports, not shells. If you can write clearly in both Vietnamese and English, you're ahead of most candidates.
English proficiency for technical documentation. Nearly everything worth reading in this field is in English, and it updates weekly.
Understanding legal boundaries. Clearly know the difference between authorized testing and illegal activity. This is both part of Domain 1 of the exam and a condition for safe professional practice.
Operational foundation. People who have worked as sysadmins or network engineers often become better pentesters than those who start from scratch, because they understand how real systems operate.
Logical roadmap
For most people in Vietnam:
- Security+ or equivalent knowledge – foundation
- PenTest+ – process, techniques, and reporting skills
- Real-world experience – projects, labs, or bug bounty
- OSCP or advanced certifications if you're in for the long haul
Step 3 is the longest step and the one that no certification can replace.
