CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) Exam Voucher with Exam Insurance — Free Retake

The process for registering for a CompTIA exam is not difficult, but there are a few places where mistakes can easily be made, costing test-takers time or even the exam attempt itself. This article covers the entire process, in the correct order.

Step 1 — Create a CompTIA account

Go to the official CompTIA website and create an account in the certification management area.

Three essential points to get right from the start:

Your full name must exactly match the identification you will bring to the exam. This is the most common and most serious error. The proctor will compare the name on the system with the name on your ID; even a single character mismatch can lead to being denied entry to the exam, and the exam attempt will be considered lost.

For Vietnamese individuals, common errors include the order of given and family names, Vietnamese diacritics, and middle names. Enter your name exactly as it appears on your passport or national ID card, even if it looks unusual in an English system.

Your email must be an email you use long-term. All notifications, exam results, and digital certificates will be sent here. A company email is a bad choice if you might change jobs.

Your date of birth and nationality must be accurate — also for ID verification purposes.

Step 2 — Activate your voucher

After purchasing the voucher, you will receive a string of characters via email.

Log in to your CompTIA account, go to the exam scheduling area, select the CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) exam, and enter the voucher code into the payment field.

Check before entering:

  • Is the code correct for the Security+ exam (CompTIA vouchers are not interchangeable between certifications)?
  • Is the code still within its validity period?
  • Is it the correct exam version (SY0-701)?

If the system reports an error, do not try repeatedly — contact the seller for verification. Entering incorrect codes continuously can temporarily lock the code.

Step 3 — Choose your exam format

This is a decision that requires careful consideration, not just a procedural step.

Take the exam at a Pearson VUE testing center

Advantages: The center provides computers and internet connection, on-site support is available for technical issues, a quiet and standardized environment, and no worries about technical errors at home canceling your exam.

Disadvantages: Requires travel, depends on the center's availability, and not all provinces/cities have testing centers.

In Vietnam, authorized testing centers are mainly concentrated in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with some in Da Nang and a few other provinces. The list and availability are displayed directly when you select your exam date.

Take the exam online at home (OnVUE)

Advantages: No travel required, flexible scheduling including evenings and weekends, suitable for those in provinces.

Disadvantages: Strict requirements for the testing room and equipment. Violating rules during the exam can lead to immediate cancellation, and the exam attempt will be considered used.

Recommendation: If you are near a testing center and this is your first international certification exam, choose to take it at a center. This eliminates one significant worry.

Step 4 — Choose your date and time

Schedule earlier than you think. Testing centers in Vietnam don't have many spots, and popular time slots often fill up 2–3 weeks in advance.

Choose a time slot that aligns with your biological rhythm, not just based on convenience for travel. The 90-minute exam requires continuous concentration; taking it when you are most alert is a real advantage.

Check the rescheduling policy before confirming. Typically, there is a minimum timeframe before the exam date to change or cancel without a fee. Closer than that deadline, you lose the exam attempt.

Step 5 — Prepare your identification documents

You will need a valid photo ID with a name that matches the name you registered with. A passport is the safest option as it has your name written in the Latin alphabet.

Some exam formats require two forms of identification, at least one of which must be photo ID. Check the specific requirements in the exam confirmation email — do not guess.

Expired ID will not be accepted, even if the photo still looks like you.

Step 6 — What to expect on exam day

If taking the exam at a testing center:

Arrive 30 minutes early. You will sign in, present your ID, have your photo taken, and store all your belongings in a locker — phone, watch, wallet, documents, everything. You are not allowed to bring anything into the exam room except yourself.

The proctor will lead you to your seat, provide a temporary whiteboard or scratch paper as per the center's regulations, and the exam will begin.

If taking the exam online:

Log in 30 minutes before your scheduled exam time. You will take photos of your testing room using your phone's camera as instructed, photograph your ID, and wait for the proctor to review them. Once approved, the exam will begin, and you must not leave the camera's view until the exam is complete.

During the exam:

Performance-based questions (PBQs) usually appear at the beginning of the exam. If a question is taking too much time, flag it and skip it — return to it after completing the multiple-choice section. This is the most important strategy in the exam room.

Step 7 — Results and certificate

The results are displayed immediately on the screen when you finish the exam. No waiting necessary.

If you pass, your digital certificate and digital badge will appear in your CompTIA account after a processing period, usually a few business days. You can download the PDF or share the badge on your professional profile.

If you do not pass, you will receive a score report with feedback by domain. Keep it — it is the most important document for your next exam attempt.

Mistakes that cause test-takers to lose an exam attempt

  • Registered name does not match ID
  • Bringing expired ID
  • Arriving late beyond the permitted time
  • Taking an online exam in a room where others walk by, or with materials on the desk
  • Leaving the camera's frame during an online exam
  • Rescheduling too close to the exam date

All of these can be prevented, and all will cost you a voucher if committed.
