This article combines two frequently asked questions: what is the actual total cost, and what are the additional consequences of failing.
Three Costs, Not One
1. Exam Fee
Mandatory expense. CompTIA sells vouchers at international prices; in Vietnam, you have two options:
Purchase directly from CompTIA — requires an international payment card, transactions in USD, incurring foreign exchange conversion fees. If issues arise, contact support across time zones and in English.
Purchase through a local distributor — pay in VND, receive an invoice, and get support in Vietnamese.
2. Study Materials and Labs
For PenTest+, this is not an optional expense like it is for Security+.
The reason is clearly explained in the article on PBQs and labs: the PT0-003 exam asks the same concept in many variations, and only those who have practiced can answer all of them. Studying by simply reading is the shortest path to taking the exam a second time.
| Option | Cost | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| Official CompTIA Objectives | Free | Mandatory, but only a list of topics |
| Build your own lab with virtual machines | Free | Takes 1–2 weeks to set up and troubleshoot configurations |
| CertMaster Perform PT0-003 | ~2.25 million VND | Official lab, aligned with objectives, runs directly in the browser |
| Instructor-led course | ~5.5 million VND | Structured learning path with an instructor, includes practice materials |
If you have more time than money, building your own lab is a reasonable choice. If the opposite is true, a pre-built lab saves you exactly what you lack.
3. Retake Fees — the Often Overlooked Cost
A used voucher is considered expired. Failing does not result in a refund or a discount for a future attempt. To retake the exam, you must purchase a new voucher at full price.
This is why the total cost for someone who fails once is nearly double that of someone who passes immediately — and almost no one budgets for this expense.
CompTIA Retake Policy
Many articles, including large English websites, incorrectly state a particular point. According to CompTIA's official retake policy:
First failure → no waiting period. CompTIA does not require a waiting period between the first and second attempts.
From the third attempt onwards → wait a minimum of 14 days from the most recent attempt.
No limit on the number of attempts, provided waiting periods are observed and fees are paid for each attempt.
If you have already passed, you cannot retake the same exam code without prior consent from CompTIA.
(Note: exams proctored by self-monitoring organizations — client-proctored — have different rules. If you take the exam through this channel, check with the organizing body.)
But Don't Rush to Retake
No waiting period sounds good, but it's a double-edged sword. Re-registering the very next week in frustration, studying superficially, and then failing a second time — and this time, a mandatory 14-day wait, plus another wasted voucher.
For PenTest+, a reasonable break is often longer than for Security+, because the most common reason for failure is insufficient practice — and insufficient practice cannot be compensated for by two weeks of reviewing materials.
- Failed close to the threshold, with scattered errors → 3 weeks, focus on practicing PBQs and time management
- Failed far from the threshold, or significantly weak in the exploitation domain → 6–8 weeks, return to the lab from scratch
- Failed due to running out of time → 3 weeks, the issue is exam strategy, not knowledge
Read the Score Report Before Doing Anything Else
CompTIA provides a score report with feedback by domain for a failed exam attempt. This is the most valuable resource you have at that moment, but many people glance at it and dismiss it due to their frustration.
Three questions to answer:
Which domain is weakest? Allocate 60% of your review time to that, don't study all domains equally. If it's Domain 4 (Attacks and Exploits, 35% of the exam), you almost certainly need to return to the lab.
Did you attempt all questions? If not, the issue is speed and strategy, not knowledge. The approach to addressing this is entirely different.
Did you make more mistakes in PBQs or multiple-choice questions? Many mistakes in PBQs mean a lack of practice. Many mistakes in multiple-choice questions mean a lack of foundational knowledge.
Three Budget Scenarios
A — Maximum Savings
For: those who have experience in pentesting or red teaming, can build their own labs, and are not pressed for time.
Voucher + free objectives + self-built lab. Cheapest if you pass on the first attempt. If you fail, the total cost nearly doubles the exam fee.
B — Balanced
For: most learners.
Voucher + CertMaster Perform PT0-003. This is the most reasonable balance between cost and probability of passing, as the lab component — which is crucial for PenTest+ — is taken care of.
C — Risk Elimination
For: those with deadlines — needing the certification for a job, a tender, or a company completion requirement.
Voucher includes a free retake option — 7,500,000₫ (original price 9,500,000₫), valid for 12 months.
The key point of this scenario is not saving money, but knowing the total cost beforehand. You won't find yourself needing to request additional budget or abandoning your efforts halfway through after failing.
A Calculation You Should Do Before Deciding
Honestly answer yourself: what is the probability you will pass on your first attempt?
Have been pentesting for several years, achieved over 85% on practice exams, have ample time to study → high probability, purchasing a regular voucher is reasonable.
Recently transitioned from defense, study in the evenings, never built a lab before → be honest with that number.
And there's a type of risk completely unrelated to knowledge: technical issues, a strict proctor, an unforeseen event during an online exam. The PT0-003 exam experience article recounts a case where an exam session was postponed simply because of notes written on the wall of the workspace.
Thorough preparation reduces most of that risk, but not all.
A Few Small Costs Not to Forget
- Travel to a test center if you're not in Hanoi or HCMC
- Certification maintenance fees — PenTest+ is valid for 3 years, renewed through the CE program
- Equipment if taking online — movable webcam, stable internet connection, private room
